Captain Beefheart (aka. Van Vliet) was one of those rare individuals who was so ahead of his time that hardly anyone liked his surreal and experimental music, but he was a major influence on other popular musicians, such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Ry Cooder, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Tom Waits, etc.
The album Trout Mask Replica (released in 1969, I think) is one of the weirdest albums I ever even heard, almost painful to listen to, but it was a huge ifluence on the music of the 1970s (especially punk!).
I don't know if and when I'll be coming back to England...
